The study, published within the journal Obesity, saw almost 3000 British adults monitored over a four-year period.
Experts discovered that the five per cent who experienced "weight discrimination" gained an average of 0.95kg within the time period while those who did not lost typically 0.71kg.
They, from University College London (UCL), said their findings contradict the most popular perception that "fat shaming" helps people slim down.
They suggested that individuals may "comfort eat" because of being discriminated against due to their weight.
"There is no justification for discriminating against people due to their weight," said lead author Dr Sarah Jackson from UCL.
"Our results reveal that weight discrimination doesn't encourage weight reduction, and claim that it may even exacerbate weight gain.
"Previous studies have found that people who experience discrimination report comfort eating. Stress responses to discrimination can increase appetite, designed for unhealthy, energy-dense food.
"Weight discrimination has additionally been shown to get people to feel less confident about getting involved in physical activity, so that they have a tendency to cure it."
Professor Jane Wardle, director of the Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Centre at UCL, added: "Our study clearly shows that weight discrimination is part of the obesity problem and never the solution.
"Weight bias has been documented not just one of the public but also among health care professionals, and lots of obese patients report being treated disrespectfully by doctors lida old because of their weight.
"Everyone, including doctors, should stop blaming and shaming people for their weight and provide support, where appropriate, treatment."
