Why diets aren't effective - three things you need to know...


Each year huge numbers of people all over the world go on a diet to lose weight. And each year millions of these dieters give up their diet and put the load back on, and frequently even more.

Why is this goal so elusive?

1. You have two minds...

Let's start with a simple exercise: close your vision and then try to remember all the details from the place where you stand and the people surrounding you (if there are any).

Attempt to remember as numerous details as you can. Then open your vision and look around.

Even if you are in a highly familiar environment you'll probably have missed a few of the things you can see. The question is not just how much you could remember. Rather, the point is that you simply did not decide to remember some things and forget other things.

There is a part of your mind that operates in your nonconscious - that merely stores several things with you and not others without you even being aware of it. However this mind will a lot more. To provide you with just one more example, it manages all of your organs - your liver, digestive system, kidneys, heart, breathing and so on - without you being aware of this happening.

While you don't know what's happening inside your nonconscious actually know about what you are considering when you make a plan - you wonder if you should or shouldn't make a move, come up with sense of something, or when you choose to shed weight.

It is really an important point: we all have a mind that will a many things - in fact completes thousands of tasks concurrently without us being conscious of it - and that we have a mind that enables us to consciously consider things.

We could name these the 'Doing Mind' and also the 'Thinking Mind'. Clearly, our 'Doing Mind' is a lot more powerful and quicker than our 'Thinking Mind'.

Otherwise it could not carry out a lot of activities simultaneously. There's a reason for this: our 'Doing Mind' has evolved over some 4 to 5 million years, while our 'Thinking Mind' developed only some 80,000 to 100,000 years back.

So nature had a great deal of time to refine and improve the 'Doing Mind', as the 'Thinking Mind' is comparatively new.

2. Making a decision to slim down is not enough...

Now it gets interesting: when you choose to shed weight you are using your 'Thinking Mind'. And when you place yourself a specific goal (I intend to lose ... kg by...) you use your 'Thinking Mind'. But your 'Doing Mind' has no idea what you are considering.

It just goes on doing what it really does best, namely helping you to survive inside a hostile environment - challenging it has been made to address and exactly how it has served humankind for a lot of the last 4 to 5 million years.

Now imagine you are going on a diet. Your 'Doing Mind' interprets the lower diet plan like a manifestation of danger. In the end, this mind is designed to help you survive in a hostile environment and eating just as much food as possible is a key survival strategy. Therefore the more you are trying to diet the more your 'Doing Mind' is pushing you to eat.

As your 'Doing Mind' is a lot more powerful and quicker than your 'Thinking Mind' it should be quite obvious regarding which mind will win this battle.

3. Don't set a diet goal - just take small steps you can maintain

There isn't any reason for setting an ambitious goal, pushing ahead and making progress quickly whenever you can't maintain your weight in the end.

The best approach is to consider your weight loss like a journey that can take place on the long period of time. You need to make steps - small enough for you to have the ability to maintain any weight reduction you've achieved. You may want to lose twenty kilos or more, however, you may be able to maintain a imelda perfect slim weight loss of, say, a few kilos.

When you are used to this new weight you are able to take the next small step. All the time your focus must be on maintenance, no ultimate goal. This will take you longer but you are much more likely to succeed.
